Parvathy Omanakuttan, the beauty queen and former Miss India has been launched as heroine in the Tamil film Umamaheswaram, directed by the young Nithin Ramakrishnan. Newcomer and dancer Mani is playing the hero and Prakash Raj plays a pivotal role.

The Pooja launch of the film took place at AVM Studios in Chennai today (May 17) morning. The tall lanky Parvathy was the cynosure of all eyes. Parvathy Omanakuttan told the media: I am happy to be launched in south with the Tamil film Umamaheswaram, in which I play the role of a Bharathanatiyam dancer. I signed up the film as the script is really good and I have a meaty role in it.

The veteran director K Viswanath noted for his dance oriented films was the chief guest at the function along with Parthipan. The others at the function were producer PL Thenappan, Kalaipuli Sekharan and VC Guhanathan.

Parvathy Omanakuttan, has decided to make her debut in Kollywood. If sources are to be believed, she has been roped in as the heroine of a film titled Uma Maheswaran.

The film produced by True Soul is based on the classical dance form
Bharathanatyam. Nithin Ramakrishnan, who directed the Malayalam movie Apoorva at the age of 18, has written the story, screenplay and dialogues of Uma Maheswaran.

It is said Prakash Raj will play an important role in this film, which will have music score by Santhosh and the cinematography by Madhu Ambat. Besides Parvathy, the cast includes Kalabhavan Mani and Vimala Raman, sources add.

The world is her stage. That was clear the minute Parvathy Omanakuttan was coronated with a tiara that proclaimed her the Miss India World. Vindicating the title, Parvathy Omanakuttan has now signed up for her first Bollywood venture, titled United Six.

Parvathy’s debut will have the beauty queen playing an action girl full of verve and energy. In the City recently, Parvathy Omanakuttan spoke on her Bollywood debut and Hollywood aspirations.

"United Six has no hero in it, it's a fast-paced action movie where six women from different backgrounds and cities battle it out to survive in Bangkok," Parvathy Omanakuttan told.

Parvathy Omanakuttan says she's been in no hurry to grab the offers pouring in her way as she’s keen on being part of interesting endeavours. "I want to be a complete actress. I am looking at something that would catapult me into the big league of Hollywood. I am not keen on confining myself to India," Parvathy Omanakuttan added.

But Parvathy Omanakuttan is modest enough to admit that she has a great deal to learn as an actress and that she wants to portray every role with finesse. What kind of magic does Bollywood wield over her?
“The Bollywood industry is changing and so is the audience. It wants new themes and newer faces. Indians love cricket and films and always want a variety in that," Parvathy Omanakuttan reasons.

And yes, it's a challenge to be known and spotted everywhere. “It's a tough battle because everybody is chasing the same dream and it's a mad race but one must be willing to take up the challenge and surge forward with confidence. Nothing is impossible,” she says, “when there's no dearth of talent and opportunities then what should one wait for?”

Parvathy knows there's no shortcut to success and hard work and the determination to do something and get somewhere is the only way to the top.

Commenting about Bangalore, Parvathy Omanakuttan says that it has a charm all of its own that no other metropolis across the country commands. “The weather is incomparable and I love it,” Parvathy Omanakuttan says.

Having lived her dream to be one of the most beautiful women in the world, Parvathy Omanakuttan Nair now has fingers crossed for her Bollywood debut United Six directed by Vishal Aryan Singh.

“I always wanted to part of the glamour world. I wanted to be a beauty queen and am happy to have reached here. I can’t think of doing anything else... I don’t really know what I would have been, had it not been the glamour industry. This is my calling in life,” says the leggy beauty.

Talk about her debut and Parvathy Omanakuttan Nair confesses that she’s glad that she waited for the right thing at the right time. “A lot of offers kept pouring in after the Miss World pageant but I did not like the scripts. When I was approached for this film, the script instantly sent positive vibes,” says Parvathy Omanakuttan Nair, adding, “The film is about six girls from different walks of life and how a situation unites them. There is no male lead in the film.”

While shooting for the film, Parvathy Omanakuttan Nair had accidentally kicked a man on the set and there was a lot of talk about the incident afterwards. Was it a star tantrum? “No, no. It was just an accident. People just need something to talk about. I guess that’s the price one pays for being a celebrity. My parents have taught me that if you have 100 people supporting you, there will be 200 others who will be against you. I always keep this in mind,” she says matter-of-factly.

Her strong connection with God is also what keeps this former beauty queen going. “I am a spiritual person. I have conversations with God whenever I feel like. These chats make me feel at peace with myself. I don’t believe in religion or caste. For me God is a someone up there who can hear me,” she says.
Did she have any apprehensions about her debut film being an all-girl flick? “I love being different. I didn’t want to do clichéd roles. This film gave me freedom to be different. I am happy to share screen space with five other actors. It has been such a wonderful learning experience. I don’t have any formal training in acting. I believe it’s best to let the camera teach you,” she avers.

Though ramp shows have taken a backseat as of now, the dusky beauty finds both acting and the ramp equally challenging. “I am open to good work, be it films or the ramp.”

Her smile makes it evident that the disappointment of losing the Miss World 2008 crown to Miss Russia has finally faded. “I don’t think about it anymore. Yes, I was upset at being so close yet so far. Anybody in my place would have felt the same. But I knew God had something else in store for me. I believe I have achieved success. For me success does not mean winning a crown; it is doing your best to make a place in people’s heart.

The road ahead might seem uncertain for her but Parvathy Omanakuttan Nair says she just wants to “live life to the fullest.” Amen to that.

While filming an action sequence for United Six, Parvathy Omanakuttan accidentally kicked a co-actor in his groin, bringing the schedule to grinding halt.

Parvathy Omanakuttan is a dangerous woman to be around. She kicked a man in his groin accidentally while shooting, and the very thought can make a grown man cry. So you can imagine the plight of the co-star when her misguided kick inadvertently landed on his most vulnerable body part.

Parvathy Omanakuttan is shooting for her Bollywood debut, United Six, directed by Vishal Aryan Singh. A source from the sets said, “Parvathy Omanakuttan kicked a little longer than required and John too came a bit more forward than he should have. As a result, Parvathy Omanakuttan’s kick hit him where it hurts the most. As a result, for a few minutes, John was in absolute daze."

Creative Producer of United Six, Surendra Bhatia confirmed the news. He said, “When John went down after the kick, Parvathy Omanakuttan didn’t know where to look. She was profusely apologetic.”

A doctor was summoned on the sets and medical aid was administered to John. Although the shoot eventually resumed John refused to can the shoots without a safety aid. The source added, “John was given medical aid and asked to rest for some time. He resumed the shoot after two hours. Since the scene had been interrupted and had to be reshot, John insisted on wearing an abdomen guard.”

In an exclusive tete a tete (Interview) with Lifestyle MSN India, Parvathy Omnakuttan says, “When Neeta called me and asked me to be part of the show, I couldn’t refuse. Walking the ramp for her is a pleasure. Her creations have always been dramatic and you can’t help but fall in love with every single creation.”

The show started off on a dramatic note…
Yes. Didn't it? When I first heard of the dance sequence, I knew I had to a part of it. The opening sequence was brought to the stage by the dancers of the Terence Lewis Contemporary Dance Company. I still remember when I was explained in detail the sequence, the theme and the choreography; I was on the edge of my seat. The sheer energy of the show radiated merely through the narration. And you could see the same excitement reaching out to the audience. There was so much of energy on the ramp with the dancers’ fluid movements. This was unlike any ramp show that I've walked.

A very different look….
Yes. It's very high on drama. That's Neeta Lulla for you. If you see her collection, it's unlike anything we've seen. Every ensemble has an ethereal quality to it. But the riot of colours that I wore and the dramatic look that I had on me was arresting. It's along the international lines. And that's what makes me even more dramatic. I was unveiling Neeta's sterling logo, N. And there had to be an element of drama to the unveiling.

Coming back to the show, tell us something about the dress you are wearing.
Well, Neeta’s collection this year was all about Tectonic Shift, in her own words. It was a transition from flamboyance to elegance to simplicity. I was the show starter and the dress I am wearing represents a flamboyant tale with bright colours. It's chiffon and organza in-laid with mirror work. And if you ask me, I feel gorgeous in her creation.

Rumours were strife that Ash would unveil the logo. But here you are….
I have no idea about the rumours floating around. All I know is that Neeta asked me and I said yes. And when she explained the theme, there was no looking back. Probably, Neeta has an association with Miss India and that's the reason I am here. But I'm not complaining. This is one fashion show that I'm glad I was part of.

The oft asked question - is Bollywood knocking at your doorstep.
Well, Bollywood is calling. But nothing is finalized as yet. I don't want to rush into anything. The last year has been fun, but grueling. And I want to sit back and savour every moment. No point rushing into something without smelling the roses...don't you agree!

Is walking the ramp an option….
Not really. I don't want to commit at the moment. One day at a time...and I want to stick to my philosophy.

But for all those who thought that Parvathy had it easy with her beautiful frame and stunning looks, there's news. It took years of hard work and determined effort to achieve a dream that most women just fantasise about. "My trainers toned me up in the shape that I am in now. I am quite a foodie but I don’t hog. I take food in small quantities through the day and it’s a mix of nutrition and delicious food any 20-year-old would like," she says, as she digs into a fatfree bagel and sipped mint tea without sugar at the quaint road-side café.

Standing tall at 5 feet 9 inches, 20-year-old Parvathy competed with 108 contestants at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa. But the Kerala- born, Mumbai-bred Parvathy was never in doubt about her abilities. "I am a cosmopolitan girl with small-town sensibilities," she says. "I was born in a fisherman's village at Changanassery, Kottayam (Kerala). That’s where my mother’s family lives. But we moved to Mumbai when I was four and I have been here all my life. I come from a conservative, Malayalam-speaking, middleclass background, but my parents (her father is a businessman and her mother a homemaker) have given me the strength to dream big." Parvathy’s story is the template of most successful women in the country.

Experts who groomed her after she won the Miss India World title agree she had the vivacity, warmth and beauty to bag the crown. "She has the 'X' factor that sets apart a supermodel from regular models. It's her vivacity and warmth that make her likeable. She is a perfect mix of beauty with brains," diction expert Sabira Merchant says. Glamour photographer Subi Samuel believes Parvat hy exudes class and confidence and this could work for her in the long run. "A camera loves a face that can give expression and Parvathy surely knows how to be cute, sexy, classy and mod at the same time," he says. Talking on the same lines, fitness expert Deanne Pandey says: "She is an ideal blend of panache and poise. Her face just lights up each time she smiles."

Parvathy Omanakuttan’s poise slips a notch when she asked about her narrowly missing out on the coveted Miss World title and her subsequent criticism of the jury.

“I was misquoted by the press. Who am I to question the jury’s decision? There is no way I could go and peek at their score sheets,” she says, visibly rattled.
In all fairness, the general consensus at the time of the contest was that the crown should have gone to Miss India.
Pressed on the issue and her tearful reaction when the announcement was made, she says: “Yes, I was very disappointed. Everyone, including the [other] contestants, thought that I deserved to win. It has taken me a long time to come to terms with it. But the support of my family and friends helped me get over it.”
The statesque beauty also prefers to think that destiny has better things in store for her.
“In my experience, success is all about the combination of three factors: hard work, support from your family and luck. The last bit is where I lost out, but I am sure better things are coming my way.”
Despite her disappointment, Parvathy is visibly excited when discussing the Miss World contest, which she said did not fit the stereotypical image of beauty queens unsheathing their manicured claws while competing for the crown. To the contrary, Parvathy Omanakuttan says she made some “real friends” along the way.
“There was no back-biting, bickering or rivalry. In fact, I am still in touch with Miss England — Laura — on Facebook.
After the contest, many of the contestants came up to me and said I deserved to win. That’s a victory in itself,” Parvathy Omanakuttan says.

Movie Offers to Parvathy Omanakuttan

Bollywood directors such as Karan Johar, who excels at candyfloss romances, and J.P. Dutta, the king of mega-productions, have been in touch.
“It’s true I auditioned for a role in a Karan Johar film. But that was before I went to South Africa for the [Miss World] contest. And it’s also true that I met J.P. Dutta before the contest. But I am still waiting for things to happen,” says Omanakuttan primly.
In the meantime, Parvathy Omanakuttan plans to take a crash course in acting.
“It makes sense to put my time to good use. Although I don’t want to do a full-fledged acting course, I want to be prepared for what’s in store for me.”
With no prior acting experience, she is planning her foray into Bollwood with military precision and hopes to retrace the career paths of established actors.
Parvathy Omanakuttan says she admires the patience and perseverance of stars such as Abhishek Bachchan and the Khan trio.
"That man [Abhishek Bachchan] has a different personality altogether. I remember when he entered movies, all eyes were on him because he was Amitabh Bachchan’s son. When his films began to flop, many wrote him off. But the way he has held his own is simply commendable," Parvathy Omanakuttan guesses.
Surprisingly, Parvathy Omanakuttan doesn’t seem as taken with Mrs. Bachchan — former Miss World-turned-actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

A few months ago, when Parvathy Omanakuttan, Miss India World 2008, jetted into Dubai for a fashion show, we were impressed by her lack of airs and graces.

Her willingness to pose patiently while a photographer struggled to compose a flattering picture in a poorly-lit hotel lobby and her offer of an interview after our brief face-to-face encounter suggested that the beauty queen would also have been a fine choice for Miss Congeniality.
Cut to 2009 and Parvathy Omanakuttan is now the holder of the Miss World first runner-up crown. But a 90-minute delay before the start of our interview and the presence of a fidgety PR executive hovering nearby raises suspicions that Parvathy Omanakuttan is now a diva in the making.
These misgivings are laid to rest as soon as the doors to her private suite are thrown open. It was simply a case of miscommunication, explained Parvathy Omanakuttan’s parents, who are chaperoning the 21-year-old.
The woman herself is the epitome of poise and charm as she explained how she planned to follow in the footsteps of former Indian beauty queens such as Aishwarya Rai, Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra and Lara Dutta and make her way into Bollywood.
“Life has changed for the better. I have received numerous offers from Bollywood directors since winning the crown. Although I am not directly involved with reading scripts, I am looking forward to acting soon,” says Parvathy Omanakuttan.

An English literature major, the South Indian beauty had all the right answers. “I love Dubai! I’m so excited to be here. I can see the fishes from my balcony,” she told Khaleej Times.

Omanakuttan said she had no regrets about winning the second spot at the pageant last year in |South Africa, where the crown was won by Russia’s Ksenia Sukhinova.

“I came back with a fulfilling experience and a lot of friends. My roommate who was Miss Indonesia was a gem,” she said, adding luck played an important role. Clad in a stunning wine-red embroidered long gown, Omanakuttan said their every move was scrutinized by the judges. “I’m happy the way I portrayed myself,” she said, adding that she wouldn’t do anything different if she had another shot at the crown.

“I’m going to try to do my bit for the world,” she said after refusing to talk about the charities she wants to be associated with. “But I love children and will be focusing on them and the elderly community beginning in India. As they say charity begins at home!”

Omanakuttan has been invited to Dubai by Good Times Global, a destination management services provider in the UAE, to felicitate her at a dance drama to be presented today by Shobhana, another renowned South Indian performer.

The 21-year-old said that as a young girl she was building her stamina on the sports field when others her age were trying to match their steps to classical beats.

“I have always been a tomboy with short hair and athletic in nature. I did learn Bharatnatyam when I was a child but then stopped when we moved to Bombay.”

Pantaloons Femina Miss India-World 2008 Parvathy Omanakuttan, who on 13 December, 2008 became first runner-up at the Miss World 2008 pageant in South Africa, landed at Mumbai airport early morning of 17 December, 2008 only to hurriedly look for a side exit. The mob of television cameras and curious onlookers overwhelmed the young 21-year-old and her family, still getting used to the trappings of fame.
Sitting on the floor of her home in Andheri `Paro' would like nothing better than to eat home-cooked food or play with her newborn nephew who will simply not wake up, never mind her celebrity presence. An informal hour spent in Parvathy's home proves that this victory is a middle class dream come true. Her cousins say her ultimate aim is to be the "female Rupert Murdoch'' by setting up a talent scouting agency, after acting in Bollywood for a few years of course.
"We are traditional not conservative,'' they say. Occupying pride of place in the living room is a collage with Parvathy Omanakuttan Miss India picture in the centre surrounded by clusters of her loyal school friends from C D Barfiwala School. Eleven young boys and four girls were in touch throughout Parvathy's journey in South Africa, congratulating -- and consoling -- her when Parvathy Omanakuttan missed the crown that they were convinced was hers. "I behaved badly with one of them,'' Parvathy Omanakuttan says regretfully.
"My cousins here in Mumbai and back in my native Kottayam broke down when they saw me lose the crown on television,'' Parvathy Omanakuttan says earnestly. "Once they heard my answer to the final question they were sure that I would win the crown. So we were all shocked. Still, in their eyes, I am the winner.'' Indeed, the entrance to the house as well as the interior is festooned with banners and posters that read, `Parvathy Omanakuttan, you are our Miss World.'
As she shows you the pictures on her laptop, a steady stream of neighbours and friends arrives to greet Parvathy Omanakuttan.
Parvathy Omanakuttan father's colleagues at the Taj Mahal Palace and Hotel have been equally supportive since her arrival. "She was mobbed by the media and bystanders when we were leaving the airport. It was the Taj staff who threw a cordon around her and escorted her to the car,'' says mr. Omanakuttan, who had accompanied her to South Africa. "Along with policemen in mufti,'' adds the lady. Omanakuttan wonders how he will feel when he returns to his familiar position by the doorway of Shamiana restaurant once it reopens.
"That was where the terrorists entered and began gunning down people,'' he says. Visiting the Taj after the December reopening is on Parvathy's list, but for now all she would like is some peace and quiet. A few hours into the crown of runner-up, her family is already perturbed by the attention. "We will put her in a burqa and whisk her away someplace where she can spend a few days incognito,'' says her father. "Somewhere you cannot even Google me,'' laughs the lady.
